The Complete Persepolis and The Sand Child - Essay Example In comparison to the first book of Tahar Ben Jellounââ¬â¢s trilogy, The Sand Child, it talks about the story of a young girl, Zahra, who is raised as a man, Ahmed. As her fatherââ¬â¢s eagerness to have a son as his heir arises, it has been decided that the 8th kid will be a son. Zahraââ¬â¢s identity crisis emerges since her early years when the natural emotions of a girl come into surface. As she conceals her true identity in accordance to her fatherââ¬â¢s image, a tyrant figure, she becomes distorted as she realizes and enjoys the advantages of being a man but at the same time empathizes with the societyââ¬â¢s cruelty to women ââ¬â her true identity. This paper compares and contrasts the most important theme in the two novels ââ¬â identity. In Search of Identity Marjane, being a daughter to liberal parents, grows up as someone who thinks outside the box. In the early part of the first book, The Story of a Childhood, she has conversations with an imaginary frie nd that looks like God and tells him that she would be the ââ¬Ëlast prophet.â⬠She announces one day in school that she would be it but all laugh at her and her parents have been Last Name 3 summoned to discuss the incident. Her parents instantly defend her to her teachers. (Persepolis, 33) In this quote, Marjane rebels on the idealism of her parentââ¬â¢s political stance and the reality of their social class. She realizes the class divisions at a very early age when she discovers that Mehri, her maid, cannot be with the man she in in love with due to their class difference. She feels a great deal of disagreement in herself from this fact, which affects makes her identity revolt from the class conflicts. Marjaneââ¬â¢s life is a study of inconsistencies and contradictions. She is torn between her ââ¬Å"avant gardeâ⬠lifestyle and her familyââ¬â¢s loyalty to their motherland and everythin g it entails. Her parents have been fighting for the poor for the longest time and yet they also have been holding on to their class distinction. She strongly defines herself as someone born in a religious heritage yet her family is secular. These contradictions during her coming of age make her feel a sense of disenfranchisement from the only land she knows. As the story progresses, Marjane finds her identity in the midst of all political chaos. One Ethical Policy that I would Like to Change If given the opportunity I would like to make some changes with regards to the policy on the ââ¬Å"Misuse of Government-Owned Vehicles or 31 U. S. C. à § 1349â⬠. Since money is scarce nowadays, everyone should be obliged to save; including those in the government and one way to save is not to use government vehicles in unofficial businesses. The punishment should not be just suspension or being fired from work, guilty individuals should also be sent to prison so that they will serve as examples because if the punishment is as ââ¬Å"lightâ⬠or ââ¬Å"easyâ⬠as getting fired or suspended then most employees will not really be prevented to violated this law. Nowadays, many people love movies and going to the cinema for movie, especially the youngest generation. Cinema are attracted to people and they will be going to the cinema watching movie every week or twice a week for relaxing after day of work or study and this already become as a trend. Cinema is a nice place for entertainment, relax, enjoyable and fun for teenagers, forms a part of our leisure time because of today life has grown complex, full of worries and anxieties. Some of their life cannot without movie. Movie will teaching a lot for us that about life in the world. We are not only can learn and make our lives better and also learn reality in life from the movies. Movies also keep updated us and know the new information, famous and popular things, place or people around the world. A research shows (Levy, n.d) the vast majority (79 perecnt) of those questioned said, Going to the movies is a good escape from everyday life. A fil m can change people life become better or worse. There have 9 types of movies are shown in cinema such as horror movies, romantic movies, drama movies, suspense movies, action movies, violence movies, comedy movies and documentary movies. Despite the fact that, watching a movie not only can affects on moral values and cultures on people who are college students, scholar and childrens and also individual behavior. It can be influence in a numerous ways. The effects of movies are various, including weighing on elements of sex and race. Some of the peoples will influence their thinking, action and attitudes changes on some level by movies but movie has good influence for youth also. In fact, movie has beneficial and harmful effect of media on youth. According to appendix A, the questionnaire and survey shows 21 out of 30 are said that teenagers like to go cinema, others are neutral and disagree. In the other hand, 13 out of 30 are said that movie will influence the behavior and attitude of teenagers in general. Many of parents will control their children going to the cinema for movie or watching film in the house. The reasons of their parents control them because they worry their child influence bad attitude and moral influence from movie like smoking and fashionable such as hairstyle and wearing. Cinema would be easily influence teenagers attitude and thinking, they will change their mind. They would change their habits and try to imitate their favorite stars hairstyle, wearing and attitude. For example, some of the children they would learn smoking from the movie. Violence movie will influence teenagers whose mine are childish. They will try to imitate like ga ngster and doing bad things. Example damage people house and cars fight with others people, bullying and vandalism. Romantic movies also will affect youth thinking and behavior. After youth watch a romantic movie, the percentage of early married will increase because the end of the movie is the best. Many people agree watching movie on weekends but teenagers, scholar, student and college student who spend too much on watching movie will be addicted and tend have sedentary lifestyle. They will not only influence their cultural, lifestyle and homework and also physical influence. Physical influence means influence their health. They always stay at cinema or home watch movie and lack of doing exercise at outside to absorb a fresh air so that they will get fat and illness. Besides that, from the survey are said that 14 out of 30 said that the movie tickets are very expensive. It would be increase the expense of the parent. The survey are said that 16 out of 30 said that are disagree movies that are played more than 1 hour are wasting time. I am agreeing also because sometimes watching movie is not wasting time. That is giving us relax after working or study. Watching movie will keep updating us with the world what had happening and trend around the world. The questionnaire shows that movie will not affect relationship like family relationship, friends and couple relationship. I am agreeing movie is a best way to improve relationship when they are sitting together watch a film because they can share and communicate about their feeling, opinion or thinking from the movie, especially family relationship. Parents should spend one or two hours for movie to accompany their children. From that, parents can know well what their children thinking and doing. Furthermore, the questionnaire survey shows that 10 out of 30 are agree movies will help us to be more creative. 12 out of 30 are disagreeing with the movies help us to be more creative and 8 out of 30 are neutral. Movie is a mind-killer. It dulls you. In my opinion, watching movie will disturb youth mind while there are doing homework or finding a creative inspiration because most of the youth, even though is adult, they also will concentrate on movie more than their tasks. The survey of questionnaire shows that 13 out of 30 are agreeing movies will affect performance in education. Parents must be full of supervision because movies will affect youth examination result, affecting college students, scholar and children reading habit. However, movies can be a powerful teacher. Sometimes youth will learn harmony, cooperation, kindness though the movie. A recent article (Anon., 2003) states that high school programming promoting media have been shown too beneficial, they give students mo re understanding when learning. And also movies will help youth to improve their language. Conclusion and Recommendation: In the conclusion, my opinion, movie is harmful more than beneficial for youth. Movie has big power to affect youth thinking, attitude, behavior, habits, lifestyle, cultural and hobby, even though is an adult. In the cinema, violence movies shouldnt band but less than 18 years old should prohibition watching violence movie in cinema so that can reduce youth imitate to be a gangster, doing a vandalism and the world may be reduce scum because under 18 years old their mind are still young, they cant analysis what are right and wrong. For me, I am not agreeing every weekend going for movie that is not necessarily because tickets of the movies are expensive. It will increase parents burden. Postmodernism With the end of colonialism and the emergence of a seemingly new world order, there raised a demand that research be useful and relevant, indicating that knowledge for its own sake was insufficient. As a result of this, what emerged was a new focus on 'development' and 'modernization' in the form of postmodernism. In these changing times, anthropology has come into contact with a variety of evolving concepts, including hybridity, montage, fluidity, and deconstruction. The question remains, how these concepts reflect the social, cultural and political changes that are occurring in study of anthropology today. Postmodernism is an intellectual movement that promotes itself as the 'antithesis' of modernism, resulting from the intensification, radicalization, or transformation of the processes of modernity. (Barfield, 368) The term was introduced in the late 1940's, however, the turn towards, if not the origin of postmodernism in anthropology, can be traced to a single publication: Writing Culture (1986). It consisted of contributions from nine scholars, edited by Clifford and Marcus, and attempted to sketch out the basic premise of the postmodern perspective. (Harris, 153) Anthropologist are forced to contend with the changes created by postmodernism in a variety of ways, beginning with the challenge to anthropological authority. It is felt by many that it is incredibly arrogant for anthropologists to assume that they have both the capacity and mandate to dissect, interpret and describe the lives of people in other cultures, given the power and wealth imbalance of th e colonial past, leaving the 'other' unable to speak for him/herself. This argument finds itself in the whole 'West vs. Rest' spectrum, claiming that because of the nature in which traditional ethnologist where carried out, ex. Colonial, anglo- whites, ect.., that today, despite the multicultural and ethnically aware world that we live in, that anthropologists are not capable of unbiasedly and accurately producing ethnographic work. In part, there concern is founded. To my knowledge, there rests no undocumented peoples on the planet, as such, ethnologies today focus on sub-group structure and societal dynamics.

The Question of Non-Human Intelligence Human beings have long assumed that they were at the pinnacle of the evolutionary pyramid thanks mainly to their more complex brain. They believe that this advanced brain makes them not just more intelligent but categorically different from all other organisms. Recent advances in the fields of neurobiology and anatomy have begun to chisel away at this most scared of human assumptions and demonstrate that human brains, and the intelligence associated with them, are not categorically different than other animals. Instead the research indicates that intelligence is on a continuum from "lower" animals to "higher" ones. These findings led to new fields of research which sought to gain a better understanding of intelligence and its evolution by comparing the behaviors and the brains of various organisms. Despite existing for many years and being supported by researchers in fields as varied as biology and linguistics there have been nearly as many steps backward as there have been forward. The central dilemma in studying intelligence is to come up with a universally acceptable definition of intelligence. Many researchers define intelligence as the ability to use language and create tools to manipulate the environment. While this definition may seem fairly logical, especially because humans seem to be the axiomatic example for this definition, many researchers argues that its anthropocentric nature is too limiting. By placing parameters on intelligence which only humans meet, and lower primates fit to varying degrees, it is inherently impossible to find "intelligence" in any other species. A second problem with this humanist definition of intelligence is that it is based largely on human introspection and the knowledge that we are conscious, rational, linguistic animals(1). Kenneth Marable argues "if the same criterion that are used to rule out non-human intelligence were applied to humans without the benefit of introspection, we would doubt even our own intelligence"(1 ). One of the first goals of inter-species intelligence studies was to create a quantitative scale to measure the intelligence of animals. Since the administration of IQ test to many different species seemed illogical, researchers turned to using scales which compared the size of an animal's brain to the size of its body; this value was known as the Encephalization Quotient. The Encephalization Quotient (EQ) "allows researchers to ask the question: 'Is the brain of a given species bigger or smaller than would be expected, compared with that of other animals its size?

This was basically propaganda; it exploited the idea that it was a young manââ¬â¢s duty to go and fight for their country. This is apparent in the first two lines of the poem; the author makes us feel that war is not excruciating pain, but ââ¬Å"just a gameâ⬠â⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s for the game, the biggest thatââ¬â¢s playedâ⬠, ââ¬Å"The red crashing game of a fightâ⬠. These opening lines make us feel that war is a big game, and fighting is just people playing games to enjoy themselves, therefore this portrays the idea of war as being enjoyable, almost like a pastime. When people read this poem it makes them think subconsciously that war is enjoyable. Jessie Pope also promotes patrotism by saying that going to war is ââ¬Å"giving your country a handâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢ll give his a country a handâ⬠she appeals to their passion for fighting their country, over their fear of being killed. There was such an affinity with patriotism that by reading just this one line would make men join the war because they wanted to help their country. Jessie Pope also feels that war is like a big show and that the people staying at home are merely the audience, and not being part of this show, i.e. not playing a part in leading their country to victory. ââ¬Å"Who wants to turn to himself in the show?â⬠and ââ¬Å"Who wants a seat in the standâ⬠. Jessie Pope thought of war as a mindless riot and the only motivations for men going to war was to shoot someone and hold a gun, this is shown when she wrote ââ¬Å"yet eagerly shoulders a gunâ⬠. The writer thinks that men would want to come back with a crutch, or some injury, as this would be their ââ¬Ësouvenirââ¬â¢ from the war. She thinks that every man would want an injury as evidence of their bravery/suffering, rather than lying in the trenches and being out of the so-called ââ¬Ëfunââ¬â¢. Jessie Pope also thinks that men who have returned unscathed from war didnââ¬â¢t have any fun; she thinks warsââ¬â¢ are all fun and games. ââ¬Å"Who would much rather come back with a crutch than lie low and be out of the funâ⬠ââ¬Å"Your country is up to her neck in a fight, and sheââ¬â¢s looking and calling for youâ⬠. This is a subliminal message that audience will rise to the challenge. Perhaps this is not an appropriate style of communication to describe war. The repetition of the word ââ¬Å"whoâ⬠followed by a question; she is questioning the audience and in the finnal two lines of the poem she tells us, who thisà ââ¬Å"whoâ⬠is. It is a direct appeal to you, the audience. She uses this direct appeal to the audience to emphasise She personifies the country as being feminine, as it is every manââ¬â¢s duty to protect or save their women. It is also therefore every manââ¬â¢s duty to protect their country; thus making them a hero. Throughout the poem she uses simple language, that everyone can understand, to appeal to a widespread audience. The poem is written so that the reader feels Jessie Pope is actually speaking to them, and therefore has an immediate effect. (As the poem was published in the Daily Mail, it would have been read by thousands of people). The tone of the poem is positive and seems like an idealistic adventure story, which is totally opposite to the realities of war. I feel that when men read this poem they would be by her patronising and threatening powers of persuasion. They would feel manipulated into feeling guilty for not ââ¬Å"doing their dutyâ⬠. The poem would probably have been read with a buoyant, upbeat tone of voice. I feel that the writer was naive about war and felt that she could explain war without actually experiencing it. As war progressed, the feeling of patriotism gradually diminished, as the death-toll was escalating daily, people came to realise that war was not all glorious and began to take in the realities. It was harder to comprehend the ideals of patriotism and duty when soldiers were returning with their true accounts of what had actually happened, and poetry was written to explain war and how it really is.
