The book starts with the narrator, who is an airplane pilot, recollecting his favorite picture when he was a six-year-old boy. The picture was of a feather boa constrictor eating a blanket(a)-grown animal. He recalls how a boa constrictor cannot move later swallowing its prey, and must hibernate for the six months until its food has been digested.
